Our
Story

The Chicago Youth Brass Bands bring together talented middle school and high school musicians from across Chicagoland to experience the excitement, artistry, and camaraderie of the British brass band tradition.

Originally launched through one-day “Windy City Brass Academy” events at Mundelein High School in June 2024 and College of DuPage in January 2025, the program quickly grew into a regular weekly ensemble under the baton of Karen Crylen in Fall 2025. Beginning in the 2026–2027 season, the ensemble will enter an exciting new chapter as the Chicago Academy Brass Band, representing Chicagoland in competition at the North American Brass Band Association Championships.

Students in the Chicago Academy Brass Band will rehearse and perform in a supportive but high-level musical environment designed to help young musicians grow both artistically and personally. Members will build confidence through rehearsal experiences, develop leadership and listening skills, and form lasting friendships with students from other schools and communities who share a passion for music-making.

Students interested in learning more are invited to attend “Youth Brass Day” on June 27, 2026 at the College of DuPage. In this fun, full-day event, participants will rehearse and perform alongside experienced brass band musicians while getting a firsthand look at the Academy experience. After the event, students may choose to participate in the full competition season running from November through May.
