Windy City Brass Society
The Windy City Brass Society is a collection of some of the leading brass and percussion musicians in Chicago, dedicated to creating an enriching and fruitful education experience for youth brass and percussion musicians throughout the Chicagoland area. Through our Academy program, led by some of the top minds in competitive brass music, we seek to educate brass and percussion musicians from all communities in the brass band medium, challenging them and providing them with the tools to grow into strong, thoughtful musicians with a passion for creating wonderful music.
FAQ
Who can join the Windy City Brass Academy Band?
Brass and percussion musicians in grades 8-12 who are passionate about music and playing their instruments!
Students should have a strong work ethic and commitment to individual practicing if they are interested in joining. Repertoire selected for the group will provide a healthy challenge to skilled musicians in the above grade range.

What is a British brass band?
A British brass band is not like a typical concert band or other types of brass bands; it is characterized by specific, unique instruments, a tradition of contesting, and very challenging and exciting repertoire.

Do students have to own a British brass band instrument to participate?
Nope! Students can play whatever brass instrument they play in their school ensembles. Percussion instruments will be provided, although percussionists should plan to bring their own sticks and mallets.
A goal of the Windy City Brass Society is to eventually purchase British brass band instruments for student use (Eb soprano cornet, Bb cornet, flugelhorn, Eb tenor horn, baritone (different than euphonium!), and Eb tuba).

Is there an audition?
At this time, all eligible students are welcome to join the ensemble without having to audition.
However, students will be asked to submit a brief, 1+ minute video of their playing as part of a seating placement to determine part assignments. They may select what music they play to showcase their skills.
If students have recently made a video audition for ILMEA or similar, they may choose to submit that.

When and where are rehearsals?
Rehearsals will generally be held at McHenry County College on Fridays through May, with alternative locations when MCC is unavailable.

Will the ensemble perform in concert?
Yes, there will be concerts Saturday evening, April 18, 2026 and Sunday afternoon, May 24, 2026. The May 24 concert with be a side-by-side with the Chicago Brass Band.

Do you offer any special events?
This summer we will invite brass and percussion musicians in grades 8-12 to participate in an all-day event where they will meet in section master classes and rehearse in a full brass band setting. The day will culminate in an evening concert, where participants will have the opportunity to play alongside some of the finest brass band musicians in the area!
