Lieke van Heumen is from Oss, the Netherlands. She graduated cum laude from the Master’s program in Psychology at the Radboud University in the Netherlands. She worked as a psychologist in four group homes for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Lieke currently is a PhD student in Disability Studies at the Department of Disability and Human Development at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) with Tamar Heller, PhD. Lieke is specializing in aging in people with intellectual disabilities. She received scholarships for her graduate studies in the United States from two private Dutch organizations, the "VSB fonds" and the "Prins Bernhard CultuurFonds"/"Carolus Magnus Fonds". Lieke also works as a graduate assistant for the Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Aging with Developmental Disabilities at the Institute of Disability and Human Development at UIC.

Lieke has played the flugelhorn and trumpet for 15 years. During her studies at the Radboud University she also had lessons from Susan van Opstal at the School of Music in Zwolle, the Netherlands. She played the solo flugelhorn in the Dutch National Youth Fanfare Orchestra for several years as well as the first flugelhorn in the Fanfare Orchestra from the Dutch province "Noord Brabant". In this period she travelled on concert trips to Belgium, Luxemburg, Austria, Slovenia, Malta and Lithuania. Lieke became a member of the Chicago Brass Band in 2009.
